Position Summary:
The Senior Manager of Online Professional Development, under the general direction of the Senior Director for Professional Development and Standards, leads the design, development, delivery, and continuous improvement of the Council for Exceptional Children’s (CEC) comprehensive online professional development (PD). This role drives the vision and execution of CEC’s virtual events and manages the Learning Library (LMS) and its associated content, and curates high quality PD resources such as PD Collections, OnDemand Programs, Quick Takes, Webinars, Professional Development Series, and Online Events. Additionally, this role will lead the development of self-guided PD learning modules. The Senior Manager may supervise PD staff who host, manage events, and support instructional design work. Through data informed planning and close collaboration with internal teams, volunteer leaders, and external partners, the Senior Manager ensures that CEC’s online learning plan reflects CEC’s strategic plan through timely, relevant, and accessible content that supports special educators at all career stages.

Strategic Oversight and Planning

  • Lead the strategic direction of CEC’s online learning initiatives, aligning all programs with the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
  • Develop and implement annual and long-term strategic plans for expanding online professional development offerings, ensuring they meet member needs and achieve revenue and engagement goals.
  • Track and report key metrics—such as registration trends, revenue performance, evaluation results, and LMS usage—and use data insights to inform continuous improvement of CEC’s online learning portfolio.
  • Track progress and completion of professional development strategic initiatives. 
  • Coordinate cross department planning to integrate online learning with broader CEC initiatives, events, and publications.

Professional Development Management

  • Plan, develop, and execute the logistics of professional development with collaboration and support from Manager of Online Learning. 
  • Collaborate to identify appropriate speaker and topic selection, manage presenter coordination, and ensure seamless delivery of high quality virtual sessions.
  • Evaluate online professional development, learning performance and participant feedback to drive innovation and enhance future offerings.
  • Oversee the curation and instructional design of PD Collections, ensuring they feature high impact, evidence-based practices, and reflect the diverse needs of special educators.
  • Lead the creation, maintenance, and review of On-Demand Programs, ensuring content is current, accessible, and aligned with adult learning principles with the support of the Online Learning Manager.
  • Develop and manage Quick Takes—short, focused learning segments—designed to provide immediate, practical strategies to learners with the support of the Online Learning Manager.
  • Supervise the development and management of webinars and professional development series from concept, to delivery, to tri-annual content reviews with the support of the Online Learning Manager.
  • Identify content gaps in CEC’s online learning portfolio and create strategic plans for recruiting and preparing presenters, coordinating schedules, and ensuring a high quality learner experience.

Learning Library (LMS) and PD Content Management

  • Oversee management of CEC’s Learning Library (LMS), including registration, product creation, and product maintenance.
  • Provide technical oversight, customer support, and quality assurance to ensure a positive staff and registrant experience.
  • Communicate and collaborate with internal teams and presenters to develop new content, monitor engagement, and implement updates.
  • Set up virtual convention for on-demand and live sessions and manage the transfer of sessions into the Learning Library.
  • Oversee documentation of PD processes and procedures to ensure that all tasks are accurately documented, clear, and accessible for all the LMS and related systems. 

Collaboration and Representation

  • Build and maintain partnerships with CEC divisions, state/provincial units, and external organizations to expand PD reach and innovation.
  • Represent CEC’s online learning portfolio through presentations, demonstrations, and collaborative meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to feature and promote online learning opportunities.
  • Supervise and support direct report(s) within the Professional Affairs team. 
  • And other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: To successfully perform this job, an individual must consistently deliver high-quality, professional work regarding each essential duty.   • Education/Experience: BA/BS degree and five or more years of progressively responsible experience in online learning, professional development, program management, instructional design, or a related field, including experience managing online learning programs, webinars, e-learning content, and/or Learning Management Systems. Supervisory or project leadership experience preferred. A background in education is a plus. 
  • Language Ability: Strong written and oral communication skills and proofreading and editing skills; excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals and groups.
  • Technology Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with project management software and webinar platforms; understanding of learning management systems (Cadmium’s Elevate LMS) is a plus.
  • Additional Skills: Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, volunteers, and external partners; Event planning or support experience preferred.
